Choosing a suitable skateboard

Published on: October 24, 2012 by Paul

Tracing its origin back to surfing in California, skateboarding has now become a popular activity. While it can be a fun and interesting pastime, it is important to know how to skateboard properly along with the different do?s, don?ts and tips and tricks to prevent unwanted injuries. One of the crucial things to remember before skateboarding is choosing the most appropriate skateboard.

Choosing a skateboard is no simple job. With the mind boggling variety of skateboards available in the present day, it becomes very difficult to choose a particular one, especially if you are a beginner. However, here are a few things to remember when going shopping for skateboards.

First and foremost remember that a hefty price tag always does not guarantee quality and a cheaper one is not a good one. Do not let the price of the skateboard be your only deciding criteria. When choosing a skateboard the top priority should be your skating style and how you skate, for instance when skateboarding, whether you prefer a long or broad board or a small one or big one.

Also your body weight should be taken into consideration. For those who have a small stature, a small board will work fine but if you are on the bigger side, it is always wiser to opt for a solid deck which will be able to give more support.

Before buying a skateboard, it is advisable to do a little research; go around a few different shops before deciding on one. This will give you a better idea about the styles and varieties available as well as allow you to compare the prices. You can also ask the opinion of the shopkeepers; most of the attendants are skaters or former skaters and can offer valuable advice which can help in your decision making; this is especially true if you are new to the world of skateboarding. Apart from deciding on the kind and width of board or deck you want, also take into consideration the quality of the wheels. Test a few of the boards to get a feel of which is the most suitable and appropriate one.

A clever way to get a good deal is to check the online stores. After deciding which skateboard you want, do a quick search and see whether it is available in the online stores at a lesser price. Remember, do not buy a skateboard in a hurry, spend a little bit of time deciding and choosing if you want a quality one.

Obama wraps blitz with Ohio rally

CLEVELAND - After 37 hours, 6,500 flight miles and six grassroots rallies that drew tens of thousands of supporters, President Obama's frenetic battleground-state blitz came to a close tonight with a rally on a small airport tarmac overlooking Lake Erie.

"This is the final stop on our 48-hour fly-around all across America. We've been going for two days straight," a visibly tired but spirited Obama told a crowd of 12,000 after taking the stage under starry skies.

"We've been from the East Coast to the West Coast and now we're going back east again," he said. "So Ohio, I gotta tell you, even though I've been going for about 38 hours straight, even though my voice is kind of hoarse, I've still got a spring in my step because our cause is right, because we're fighting for the future."

The event was marked by the dramatic arrival of Air Force One - the smaller Boeing 757-model - on a landing strip several hundred yards from where the crowd was huddled. The plane taxied right up to the stage and bleachers, which were lit by giant floodlights for Obama's final stump speech of his self-described travel "extravaganza."

The crowd chanted "Obama! Obama!" as the president jogged down the steps of his bird and out onto the stage.

"Hello, Ohio!" he said.

Over the past two days, Obama has crisscrossed the country, visiting Iowa, Colorado, California, Nevada, Florida, Virginia, Illinois and Ohio. He addressed 68,000 voters combined at rallies across the country and spoke to tens of thousands more by phone in conference calls from Air Force One.

He arrived here at Burke Lakefront Airport just hours after casting his own ballot in Chicago - the first time a sitting president has voted early in person for a general election campaign.

"I've come to Ohio today to ask you for your vote," he said. "And I'm asking you to vote early. Here in Ohio you can vote now. You don't have to vote later. I need you to vote now and I need your help to keep moving America forward."

Ohio is viewed by Obama strategists and the Republican nominee Mitt Romney's campaign as the decisive state in the 2012 election. President Obama has visited Ohio 18 times visit this year - making it his most-visited state of the election campaign, underscoring its importance.

"Ohio, I believe in you. And I need you to keep believing in me," Obama said. "And if you're willing to roll up your sleeves ? we're going to win this election and finish this election."

Analysis: Americans to face tougher 2013 on rising prices, taxes

Analysis: Americans to face tougher 2013 on rising prices, taxes

By Edward KrudyPosted 2012/10/25 at 7:25 am EDT

NEW YORK, Oct. 25, 2012 (Reuters) ? Consumers will have to dig deeper into their pockets next year to pay for costlier healthcare, more expensive grocery bills and higher taxes, an extra drag on the country's already slow-moving economy.

A shopper walks down an aisle in a newly opened Walmart Neighborhood Market in Chicago in this September 21, 2011 file photo. REUTERS/Jim Young/Files

The additional outlays look set to test the resilience of consumers, whose spending accounts for around two-thirds of the U.S. economy.

"We think it's going to be a difficult six to nine months," said Scott Hoyt, senior director of consumer economics for Moody's Analytics. "If anything, conditions are likely to get worse, particularly at the start of the year."

The strength of consumer spending has surprised some economists, given unemployment near 8 percent and anemic wage growth. Consumer spending has cushioned the blow to the United States from slower foreign demand for its goods.

U.S. households have shed about $880 billion in debt since the peak in the first quarter of 2008, according to Federal Reserve data. That has put many consumers on a path back to financial health.

But an expiration of payroll tax cuts in early January and a spike in food prices could wipe 0.8 percentage points off U.S. economic growth next year, according to some economists.

The economy is now expected to expand 2 percent in 2013, down from 2.1 percent in 2012, a Reuters poll showed.

Consumer groups are noting caution on the part of households when it comes to such things as taking on more debt, retirement savings and gasoline prices.

"People are very concerned about what is going to happen next year because they are already seeing price increases that are affecting their budgets," said Bruce McClary, a spokesman for Clear Point, a nationwide credit counseling organization that helps consumers experiencing problems with debt.

"They are also worried about any kind of changes that might be happening with regard to their income tax, that they are going to have less disposable income to work with," he said.

Economists at JPMorgan say expiration in January of a temporary 2 percentage-point cut in the payroll tax would reduce household spending by $125 billion and lower gross domestic product by about 0.6 percentage point next year.

Still, loss of the payroll tax cuts would be only one aspect of the "fiscal cliff," a popular name for automatic across-the-board spending cuts and tax increases that would suck about $600 billion out of the economy next year.

U.S. lawmakers are expected to find a way to soften the blow of most scheduled tax hikes, including income taxes, and spending cuts due to take effect from January 1. But if they don't, the tax increases and spending cuts could result in the most severe belt-tightening in the United States since a tax increase in 1969 to pay for the Vietnam War.

FOOD, HEALTHCARE, EDUCATION

Another area of concern for consumers is food prices. Rises in the prices of corn and soybeans and other field crops as a result of drought this year in the U.S. Midwest are expected to feed through into food prices late this year and in early 2013.

U.S. soybean prices jumped 40 percent over the summer, while wheat shot up about 50 percent. Prices have eased a bit since then, but the increases are expected to filter down to consumers.

"We are starting to see evidence of food prices moving up so that's definitely going to be a drag on disposable incomes," said Hoyt of Moody's Analytics.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture sees food price increases of 3.5 percent to 4.0 percent next year, greater than this year.

Hoyt says that could cut 0.2 percentage point from economic growth over the winter, when food prices could peak.

Reflecting the strain on many budgets, U.S. shoppers plan to spend an average of about $750 on gifts, decorations and other holiday items this season, only 1.2 percent more than a year ago, according to a recent survey published by the National Retail Federation.

That would be the smallest increase since 2008-2009, when holiday sales fell 1.8 percent during the financial meltdown.

"You could argue that we are still at recession levels on a lot of the consumer indicators," said Jeffrey Cleveland, a senior economist at investments manager Payden & Rygel in Los Angeles. "I don't expect the consumer to be a powerhouse."

Another big extra outlay will be in healthcare premiums, which on average are costing employees more than $2,200 in 2012, according to Aon Hewitt, a human resource consulting firm.

Average health care premiums are forecast to jump by 6.3 percent in 2013, according to Aon Hewitt

Over the last five years, employees' share of healthcare costs will have increased more than 50 percent, it said.

On top of everything else, the cost of a college education is being felt more keenly by many Americans.

Tuition costs for the 2012-13 academic year rose again but federal grant aid and tax benefits did not increase in the previous year - the most recent for which data is available - according to a report published on Wednesday by the College Board Advocacy & Policy Center.

The pain of higher living costs is not being felt evenly.

Households with incomes under $75,000, people older than 50 and those with lower levels of education believe their financial positions are getting worse, according to a survey by Bankrate.com, a research firm specialized in consumer finance.

"A lot of low- and middle-income households are mired with a stagnant income at a time when food and energy costs keep moving higher," said Greg McBride, a senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com.

Rival jailed, Ukraine president on path to victory

KIEV (Reuters) - President Viktor Yanukovich looks set for victory in a national election in Ukraine this weekend, despite his jailed rival Yulia Tymoshenko calling on voters to stop an imminent "dictatorship".

Yanukovich's Party of the Regions and a union of opposition forces backing Tymoshenko held final public rallies on Friday in the capital Kiev ahead of Sunday's poll for a new parliament.

No opinion polls have been published since October 18, under an official information blackout. Earlier polls showed Regions leading the joint opposition, which includes Tymoshenko's Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party, and a liberal party headed by world heavyweight boxing champion Vitaly Klitschko.

Yanukovich's party leads despite the government's unpopularity because of tax and pensions policies and its failure to stamp out corruption. The former Soviet republic also looks isolated after rows with the United States and the European Union over Tymoshenko, and with Russia over gas.

There is also the question of what judgment international observers will hand down after monitoring the election.

Ukraine's economy is vulnerable to falling demand for steel and other exports while the International Monetary Fund froze lending in 2011 when Kiev balked at painful reform.

Commentators nevertheless expect Yanukovich's pro-business Regions, bankrolled by wealthy industrialists and able to draw on state and regional facilities and resources, to hold on to a majority in the 450-seat assembly.

"We have rebuilt the country, we have achieved stability," Mykola Azarov, prime minister and formal leader of the Regions, told a rally.

Azarov, who heads the Regions' ticket, was joined by several other party leaders and a Ukrainian pop star who is No. 2 on the party list. His government has raised public sector wages and pensions ahead of the vote, recovering some of the lost support at the cost of widening the budget deficit.

The Regions have promised to make Russian an official state language alongside Ukrainian - a move which was aimed at winning back disenchanted supporters in Russian-speaking areas of the east and south but alienated voters elsewhere.

OPPOSITION WARNING

The opposition has warned that a Regions victory will usher in authoritarian rule and policies tailored to further enrich business "oligarchs" and Yanukovich's trusted inner circle.

Tymoshenko, 51, a political firebrand in her heyday, on Thursday called on voters to throw out the Regions, warning Yanukovich could "establish a dictatorship and will never again give up power by peaceful means".

Her lieutenant Oleh Turchinov opened the Friday rally, which took place just 500 m (yards) away from that of the Regions but was much more somber, by reading out her same address.

Another Batkivshchyna leader, Anatoly Hrytsenko, acknowledged the Regions' lead but urged his supporters to reach out to undecided voters.

"We can break their ratings and their plans. Twenty percent of voters have yet to decide who to vote for," he said.

Klitschko has pledged to work to stamp out endemic corruption in the country of 46 million. He and his UDAR (Punch) party, which has surged in ratings, are a wild card in the poll.

He has turned his back on any alliance with the Regions and says he will side with the united opposition led by Arseny Yatsenyuk, a 38-year-old former economy minister.

But the fact Klitschko declined to sign a pre-election coalition agreement with Yatsenyuk-led forces has engendered suspicion among the opposition.

Of the 450 seats in the single-chamber parliament, 225 will be filled through voting by party lists - where the voter casts a ballot for a party which presents a list of candidates.

The other half will be decided by voting for individual candidates on a first-past-the-post basis - a feature re-introduced by the Regions which is assumed to favor the party.

International monitors include a 700-member team from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

The OSCE will deliver its verdict on Monday. A positive assessment could improve the international image of Yanukovich before Ukraine takes over the chair of the human rights and security body in January.

Watch out, iPad! Android snags 41 percent of tablet sales

2 hrs.

Tablet sales increased in the last year, and it appears that Android accounted for more of that growth than the current champion, iOS. Apple is still on top, but for how long?

Strategy Analytics reports that global tablet sales in the third quarter of 2012 reached nearly 25 million ? up 43 percent from the same period last year. That sounds like a lot, but in fact, it's the weakest growth the tablet market has seen since it began.

But it's still a big increase in absolute terms, and Android owned the lion's share of it. It doubled its shipments since the same period last year, from 5 million to 10 million. Apple still has it beat, but their shipment increase was much smaller: from?11 million to 14 million.

So of the 25 million tablets shipped, Android accounted for about 41 percent of them, while 57 percent were iOS.?

Worth noting is that Apple's 14 million units shipped were all one or two models: the 3rd-generaion iPad and the cheaper iPad 2. Android, on the other hand, is a wilderness of sizes, brands, and prices. The Kindle Fire has been calculated to be the single most popular Android?tablet, and?other standouts, like the Nook and Nexus 7, have also moved quite a few units. But there are hundreds of smaller brands and cheaper devices that also contribute to the total.

Apple's new iPad Mini, unveiled Tuesday,?might give a boost to sales, and the next year may also see Microsoft's new tablet, the Surface, in the mix. Pre-orders for the least expensive Surface?sold?out recently. And,?Google, too, may yet have?a surprise up its sleeve: An event on the Monday promises new tablets and possibly an updated operating system.

High school football playoffs get underway tonight

Once one of the doormats of the Mississippi Valley Conference, Waterloo East is in the playoffs for the third straight season. Trojan coach Kody Asmus says that his players now know what to expect when the postseason rolls around. He says they are in elite company in the conference to make the playoffs for three years.

Asmus says Assumption quarterback Jake Gervase will present a challenge for the East defense. East?s spread attack is something that Assumption hasn?t seen much of this season, but Asmus says that also means that his players aren?t too sure how the Knights defense will line up either.

In just their first season in the eight-player division, Don Bosco won a district championship and enters the playoffs with an unblemished record and ranked second in the Radio Iowa poll.

The Dons feature a dual-pronged rushing attack with quarterback Jake Hogan and running back Tyler Backes. While Hogan might get more attention from defenses, Dons coach Kolby Yoder says that Backes is a big part of the offense as well.

He says a lot of people overlook Backes, and says he does a lot of blocking as well as running. The Dons face West Central tonight, and will be focused on Blue Devil running back Michael Lincoln, the leading rusher in the eight-player division.

Dons coach Kolby Yoder says Lincoln is a tough runner and he says it will be a good challenge for the defense and they will have to stop him to win the game. Yoder says that Lincoln is good enough to get a certain number of yards regardless of what the Dons do on defense, so they?ll be focused on try to limit the number of big gains he gets.

West Central enters the playoffs on a three game losing streak, but Yoder says that could just mean they?ve been unlucky in a tough district.

In class 2A, top ranked and unbeaten Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley will host Clarion-Goldfield. The Cowboys are 6-3 but a year ago rode a low seed all the way to the quarterfinal round. Nighthawks coach Cory Brandt says they won?t be intimidated by being the underdog.

Brandt says a good start would be a plus because their style of offense is not one made for catching up. Clarion-Goldfield coach Paul Hansch knows his team is facing a tough challenge. He says he likes the style of play as they are quick and run very well.

Hansch says his team needs to control the football and grind out some first downs to manage the field position or they will lose the game.?? Listen to Radio Iowa?s Football Friday Night Playoff edition tonight at 10 p.m. for the playoff game scores

Bergen County judge orders sketchy contractor to pay $7.7 million

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A judge in Hackensack? has ordered a $7.7 million judgment against a fraudulent home improvement contractor who has used distinctive vehicles to resemble police cars.

?These defendants allegedly left consumers with shoddy work, broken promises, and warranties that were ignored ? often while using business names or language on their websites that implied they had some connection to government or police work,? Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said this morning.

Chiesa said the judgment holds John Kot, Roofing Police, Inc. and his other companies accountable, permanently barring them from home improvement work ? and placing a lifetime ban on Kot from owning or managing another business in New Jersey.

Bergen County Superior Court Judge Robert P. Contillo found that Kot, 41, of Garwood and his companies committed 1,542 violations of the state Consumer Fraud Act, Contractors? Registration Act, Contractor Registration Regulations, Home Improvement Regulations, and Advertising Regulations.

The total amount ordered by the judge includes $150,000 in consumer restitution, $7.5 million in civil penalties, $38,000 for the state?s attorney?s fees, and $30,000 for the state?s investigative costs.

A colleague, Gabriel R. DaSilva, Jr., settled separately with the state, although Contillo?s order assesses a $30,000 civil penalty against him.

DaSilva isn?t barred from doing home improvement work ? as long as he first obtains state registration as a home improvement contractor.

The state?s complaint, filed on behalf of the Division of Consumer Affairs by the Division of Law, alleges that Kot and his companies:

did substandard work;
refused to repair their substandard work despite promises and/or warranties;
refused to return consumer deposits for work that was never performed;
failed to honor guarantees or warranties provided in their contracts;
began work without the necessary state or local permits.

State officials said they used multiple names, addresses and phone numbers, many out of Hackensack, Fair Lawn, Maywood and Garwood.

These included A-1 American Construction, Inc.;
A 1 American Chimney Limited Liability Company;
Brick City Chimney Service, L.L.C.;

Waiting longer to have sex tied to more wealth, education and ...

CBS News:

Here?s some more reasons why teens should wait to have sex: A recent study shows that people who were over the age of 19 when they first had sexual intercourse were more likely to have higher educational levels and higher household income.

In addition, out of those who had gotten married or were living with a partner by the end of the study, the people who had sex later in life reported less unhappiness in their relationship than their peers who had sex earlier.

Manning 77-yarder to Cruz rallies Giants 27-23

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Robert Griffin III came to the New York-metropolitan area and put on a show. He ran. He threw. He dodged New York Giants' defenders with breakaway speed and left many shaking their heads and bemoaning another meeting down the road.

The rookie sensation left something else on the field. A couple of costly turnovers and way too much time for Eli Manning to pull off another fourth-quarter comeback.

Manning one-upped RGIII with a pinpoint 77-yard scoring pass to Victor Cruz with 1:13 to play and the Giants overcame a late touchdown toss by Griffin to defeat the Washington Redskins 27-23 on Sunday.

"He has done it so many times," veteran Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty said after Manning delivered his eighth fourth-quarter winning drive in less than two seasons. "He has really bridged his performance in the 2011 season to the 2012 season. It's just more of the same. He continues to get better. He is probably the most deadly quarterback in the fourth quarter."

Manning's pass to Cruz was the longest game-winning touchdown in the final two minutes in the history of the franchise, which dates to 1925. It came two plays and 19 seconds after Griffin capped what was a potential winning, 77-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown toss to Santana Moss.

The rookie had kept the drive alive with a 19-yard pass off a desperate scramble on a fourth-and-10 play deep in his own territory, and a 24-yard run on the next play.

But Manning made one more play in keeping the Giants (5-2) in first place in the NFC East.

"With our offense and Eli at the helm, we're never too worried," said Cruz, who had seven catches for 131 yards. "No matter what situation we're in, no matter how many points we need or a field goal we need, we have the confidence we can do it. We have a lot of confidence in each other, and in Eli."

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan agreed even though he was miffed that defensive backs Josh Wilson and Madieu Williams allowed Cruz to blow by them on the seam pattern.

"He sure proved it today," Shanahan said after his team (3-4) blew a chance to move into a first-place tie. "It was a great throw. He was double-covered, but (Manning) put it right on the money."

Manning, who finished 26 of 40 for 337 yards, had to make the throw a little sooner than he wanted.

"I kind of threw it high and deep and saw the coverage and was hoping Victor saw it the same way I did," he said. "I didn't see the ball get caught. I heard the cheer and that was a good sign. I got up in time to see him run into the end zone."

Manning triumphantly pumped his fist once after the play as the more than 80,000 fans at MetLife Stadium erupted with cheers.

"He did a good job leading his team to victory today," said Griffin, who ran for 89 yards and passed for 258 and two touchdowns. "When the game is on the line, you want the ball in your hand, no doubt about it. He made the play to win it."

Griffin had the Redskins moving when Moss was tackled by Chase Blackburn and fumbled after an 11-yard reception. Rookie Jayron Hosley recovered at the Washington 43.

"There's no excuse for them, but with all that stuff, we had a chance to win at the end," Griffin said.

The wild finish capped a game in which both quarterbacks also made major mistakes.

Ahmad Bradshaw and Andre Brown scored on 1-yard runs and Lawrence Tynes kicked a pair of field goals for the Giants, who won despite giving up 480 yards in total offense.

Griffin was 20 of 28 with Moss catching both his TD passes. Fellow rookie Alfred Morris gained 120 yards rushing.

The Giants had 396 yards in total offense, with the biggest chunk coming on Manning's pass to Mr. Salsa.

Before the wild finish, the second half was dominated by turnovers.

Griffin was picked off by safety Stevie Brown and his 41-yard return late in the third quarter set up Bradshaw's 1-yard plow-job into the end zone, a play which was reviewed.

Griffin moved Washington into position to tie the game on the next possession, but he fumbled after being sacked by Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph recovered at the Giants 29.

On the next play from scrimmage, linebacker Rob Jackson intercepted a quick out by Manning and Forbath kicked a 45-yard field goal to narrow the lead to 20-16 with 5:21 to go.

The Giants were forced to punt on their next series and Washington got the ball back at its 23. After gaining nothing in three plays, Griffin went back to pass on fourth down, eluded Pierre-Paul and then danced around long enough to find tight end Logan Paulsen for a 19-yard gain and a first down at the 42. The 24-yard scamper got the ball to the New York 34 and two plays later Moss beat Hosley and hauled in Griffin's perfect pass as Griffin lay on his back and celebrated like a snow angel.

"He's tough," Blackburn said of Griffin. We played well for three downs got them into a fourth and 10, and had him. JPP had him dead to rights. Any other quarterback and he makes that sack."

Manning and Cruz spoiled the afternoon seconds later.

"I'm pretty mad at the football gods for putting him in the NFC East," Giants defensive end Justin Tuck said. "To face that guy twice a year is going to be a headache."

There were seven offensive possessions in the first half that resulted in 439 total yards, six scores and a 13-13 tie.

NOTES: Washington TE Fred Davis suffered an Achilles tendon injury and will miss the rest of the season. ...Redskins LB London Fletcher, who has played in 231 straight games, suffered a leg-hamstring injury in the second half. ...The Redskins gained a season-high 248 yards rushing. ... Bradshaw gained 43 yards rushing after collecting 316 in the past two games. ... New York had three sacks, and allowed its first in four games.

How To Buy A Foreclosed Property For Investment Or To Live In ...

When a financial institution takes control of a particular property where the home owner is unable to make the home loan payments, a foreclosure occurs.? Other reasons for house foreclosures may be lack of paying property taxes or contractor?s debts. When a lender takes ownership of a residence, it will likely be for sale immediately in order to keep away from maintenance expenditures, upkeep and security.

If you might be thinking about buying a foreclosed property you possibly can discover the related information from local newspapers, loan company internet sites, subscription newsletters, plus the county recorder?s office. Below is some facts on how to get a foreclosed property.

Purchasing a foreclosure home from a loan company won?t present a risk for the buyer. This is mainly because the bank normally pays various other outstanding financial obligations such as taxes and additional liens to market the property without any problems. It would also have evicted the previous owners or tenants and appraised it before trying to sell it. The loan company will also have the capacity to bargain on selling price, interest, closing costs and down payment. So you will not need to devote time on all these considerations.

However, if you have determined to get a home, especially a foreclosure home, you will need to look into several aspects prior to proceeding further. The actual legal actions required in the purchase may possibly differ from state to state. If you are looking for a foreclosed home, you possibly can notify the local real estate lawyers and agents within the area you?re interested in.

Talk to government agencies and financial institutions such as the Veterans Administration, Federal Housing Administration and also the Department of Housing and Urban Development to uncover the actual foreclosed properties inside the area.

Understand the process of property foreclosure in your state. You can make a detailed inspection of the house to know the condition of it and decide its value. Get an idea of the sales price of the house in respect to what other houses in that area have sold for.

Find out? the particulars regarding the estate or property and if you will find any possible issues, such as past due taxes or various other liens on the home. When you?ve gotten all the particulars and you are sure of the value of the house, it is possible to make contact with the foreclosure sale trustee and ask about the lowest bid that will probably be accepted by the financial institution.

After you get the details, you need to also figure out your financing alternatives and find out about the various types of loans which are obtainable. Now it is possible to make the offer at the auction by submitting your bid to the bank. Some purchasers also prefer to acquire the property previous to the foreclosure. You will need to speak with the owner to find out if he is inclined to sell his house. Nonetheless, you might want to make use of the assistance of a real estate legal professional to complete the proceedings.

'There is no such thing as the Catholic vote'

(Reuters) - Most U.S. Catholics believe the church should focus more on social justice and the obligation to support the poor, even if it means focusing less on issues like abortion, according to a new poll released Monday by the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute.

The 2012 American Values Survey finding on Catholics goes against the focus of many U.S. Catholic bishops, who have been stressing the church's ban on abortion and artificial contraception in public policy statements. The poll found that 60 percent of Catholics believe in a greater focus on social justice issues rather than abortion, while 31 percent say the opposite.

The divide was true even among Catholics who attend church once a week or more, a group that is often considered more socially conservative. A slim majority of this group, 51 percent, thought that the church should focus more on social justice issues.

"The survey confirms that there is no such thing as the ?Catholic vote,'" said Robert P. Jones, CEO of PPRI and co-author of the report. "There are a number of critical divisions among Catholics, including an important divide between ?social justice' and "right to life' Catholics."

U.S. bishops in this election season have made strong statements opposing same sex marriage, abortion and contraception, particularly in protest of the health care mandate which requires Catholic hospitals and universities to provide insurance that covers artificial birth control, which is against Catholic teachings.

The survey also found that among Catholics who attend church weekly or more, 57 percent support a prison sentence of life without parole as opposed to the death penalty. This was also true among Catholic conservatives, who supported life without parole over the death penalty by 51 percent to 44 percent, compared to non-Catholic conservatives, who favor the death penalty by 56 percent.

"The church has clearly had a real impact on Catholic attitudes toward the death penalty, particularly among conservative Catholics," said E. J. Dionne, Jr. Senior Fellow at the Brooking Institution and a co-author of the report, speaking at a press event Monday morning. He noted that Catholics who are more conservative on the abortion issue are more "liberal" on the death penalty.

The survey also found that the religiously unaffiliated is the fastest growing group in the country's religious landscape, comprising 1 in 5 Americans and more than doubling in size since 1990. The majority were raised in a particular faith, and their reasons for leaving range from a fading belief in God to negative personal experiences with religion.

Regarding political preferences, the religiously unaffiliated, Hispanic Catholics, non-Christians and Black Protestants were more likely to support President Barack Obama. Nearly 8 in 10 likely supporters of Republican contender Mitt Romney identify as white Christian, including 37 percent who say they are white evangelical, 19 percent who identify as white mainline Protestant, and 19 percent who identify as white Catholic.

The support for Obama among the religiously unaffiliated was large, by 73 percent to 22 percent, but this group was less likely to say they were certain to vote compared to religiously affiliated Americans.

"We are not feeling the full force of their presence at the ballot box," said Jones.

The report found that a third of religiously unaffiliated Americans were ages 18-29. People in this age group were also more likely to support Obama, by 70 percent.

Dionne said noted that if younger voters continue to vote Democratic, as they have in recent elections, they could represent the "replacement generation" for the old "New Deal" generation of Democratic voters who grew up in the 1930s.

The survey was taken between September 13 and September 30 before the presidential debates and involved 3,003 respondents, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percent.

Kate Sanner ? Use Audio to Market Your Practice - cudabos posterous

Audio is a valuable marketing tool that should be in your practice?s marketing tool box.? Why?? Because next to hearing you speak in person, there?s nothing more effective than audio.?One of the best ways to get your message out is through creating audio content. When you consistently deliver the message of your practice in your voice, you gain credibility and you give your audience (aka target market) the opportunity to know, like and trust you ? which helps you get more clients.

If you would like to listen to this post instead, here is the audio version:

Now, I have to let you know that I am very biased in favor of audio.? I fell in love with it several years ago- and I fell hard!? So much so that I set up my own in-home recording studio and even ran an internet radio station for several years (I?m a hands-on person and I LOVE tools of all sorts!)? BUT you don?t have to have an in-home studio to create audio.? All you need is great content and a telephone or a microphone that plugs right into your computer.? When I am not using my in-home recording studio, I use Audio Acrobat which is a fantastic service.

7 benefits of using audio to market your practice

Audio?

  1. positions you as an expert with your target market
  2. positions you as?a leader?in your industry
  3. builds credibility ? as your audience listens to your voice and your words, the trust in you begins to grow
  4. increases exposure and enables you to reach a wider audience - as you post audio in different places (e.g. iTunes, social media more people learn about you)
  5. leverages your time and your efforts ? e.g., you can re-purpose written content into audio
  6. enables you to create a targeted, benefits-driven message to your audience
  7. is completely time-shiftable ? i.e., it can be listened to any time, anywhere

7 ways you can use audio:

  1. Have informational audios on your website in addition to articles.? Choose a topic that matches the needs and wants of your target market and give tips or solutions in your audio
  2. Record your signature talk and offer it as a free taste of your expertise
  3. Use audio for your opt-in offer on your website
  4. Use audio as an ?audition? for speaking engagements
  5. Host teleseminars and teleclasses ? free or paid
  6. Give an expert interview ? Write out some questions you would like to be asked in your area of expertise. Then ask a colleague or friend with a good speaking voice to record the interview with you. Don?t make this recording a hard sell of your business. (Of course, your URL can be announced in your introduction and at the end and it can be printed onto the CD.) Instead, use this interview to really showcase your expertise and establish your credibility.
  7. Interview experts ? Record interviews with experts that can provide great, expert information for your target audience. You can post these on your site as freebies or bundle several together and create a product that is a great opt-in offer.

Note:? Make sure to always include your website URL when you give your contact information in the audio.

Action Step to use audio

If you are just getting started, familiarize yourself with how to record audio on your computer or sign up for a free trial of Audio Acrobat.? Find content that isn?t too long and record your first audio.? Post it on your blog and share it on social media.? Look over your articles, blog posts, etc. and see what is content that would make a good audio.

Once you get more experienced, consider hosting regular teleclasses that provides great content and serve to launch new products and services you create.? A free teleclass is a tried and true way to get prospects into your marketing funnel.

P.S.??I can help you design a marketing plan that is right for your practice ? including the strategy of creating audio. ?Sign up for one of my coaching and consulting packages today!

Here again is the audio version of this post:

More gaming for a good cause - Extra Life starts Saturday, October ...

It?s going to be a long 24 hours, but I?m hoping it?ll be a rewarding 24 hours. Aside from August?s?annual GamesRadar Gaming Marathon?for charity, I?m participating in?Extra Life 2012. If you?re plugged into social networks, you might have noticed the numerous tweets and Facebook updates flying around over the past few days. My team is contributing to?Children's Hospital of Oakland?during this year's fundraiser.

I?m going to be starting a little earlier than others, who seem to be targeting the morning of Saturday, October 20th to start. For personal reasons involving party hats, I will be kicking things off a little earlier at midnight Pacific time (as of publish, why, that's six hours away!). What?s on my roster of games to play?

I?m looking at diving into:

FIFA 13?(PS3, maybe 360)
Borderlands 2?(PS3, maybe 360)?
Uncharted 3: Drake?s Deception?(PS3)

And probably, in the later hours of the marathon, as I begin to get loopy and lose my mind, I may hop onto Facebook for some quality time with You Don?t Know Jack.

If you want to participate in games with me, I?m setting up the following rules*: For FIFA, donate $3 (or more, if you want) for every time I beat you. For every draw, donate $1 (or more, if you want). And, if you see fit to make a donation, win, lose or draw, that?s fine, too. For the multiplayer games, I?m hoping for a donation between $10 and $20 for each level we advance playing together.

Look for PSN ID GSI_Sterling_M online!

Of course, if you don?t want to participate but want to contribute to a good cause, you can donate a flat amount. Also, if you want to help raise funds with me, sign up for my team, the?Own Goal Superstars!

Either way, Extra Life is all about contributing to a good cause. Do it for the kids!

*I may totally change the rules as I go along. Because I can.?Follow me on Twitter?to keep up!
