ROME, N.Y. -- The sights and sounds of some of the best drum corps in the country entertained a large crowd at Rome Free Academy Stadium Thursday. This was the 35th annual Drums Along the Mohawk show.

Seven drum corps took part, each made up of about 120 members ages 14 to 21.

The show is part of a nationwide tour that travels coast to coast, but organizers say Rome has a unique quality to it that makes everyone feel at home.

"We have a phenomenon called 'Rome Belly' because there are so many organizations that will battle to feed the different groups as they come into town. We were fed today at the Rome Polish Home. Tomorrow we're being fed at the American Legion Post and it's a great thrill for the kids and gives us a little bit more opportunity to interact with the community than we normally would have a chance to do," said Bob Jacobs, Director of Marketing for Drum Corps International.

Jacobs says about half of the kids involved will go on to pursue careers in music education or music performance and the money raised at the show helps provide grant awards for kids who plan to pursue those opportunities.
