British al Qaeda suspect to appear in U.S. court

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Pakistani man accused of taking part in an international al Qaeda plot to attack targets in the United States and Europe is expected to make his first U.S. court appearance Monday afternoon in New York, where he is facing terrorism charges.

Abid Naseer, 26, was extradited on Thursday from Britain to Brooklyn, New York. He is facing up to life in prison on charges including providing material support to al Qaeda and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction in connection with an alleged plot to bomb a city centre in Manchester, England.

The charges against Naseer are also connected to an alleged al Qaeda plot in 2009 to bomb the subway system in New York City, U.S. prosecutors said. Two men, Najibullah Zazi and Zarein Ahmedzay, have pleaded guilty to planning the attacks and a third man, Adis Medunjanin, was sentenced to life in prison after his conviction last year for taking part in the plot.

Naseer is one of a dozen men, mostly students from Pakistan, who were arrested in Britain in 2009 on suspicion of plotting to bomb a city centre in Manchester. British authorities conducted daylight raids on the suspects' homes after Britain's most senior counter-terrorism official was photographed openly carrying details about the operation.

British authorities said they found large quantities of flour and oil in the suspects' homes, as well as highlighted surveillance photographs of public areas in Manchester and a map of the city centre.

Naseer and the other suspects were never charged, but British and U.S. authorities said Naseer was part of a broader al Qaeda cell bent on staging attacks in the United States and Scandinavia.

Naseer was indicted in Brooklyn federal court in 2010, along with Medunjanin and other individuals alleged to be linked through a multi-national al Qaeda conspiracy. U.S. prosecutors said Naseer and Zazi coordinated their plans through emails to the same Pakistan-based al Qaeda facilitator, "Ahmad," using similar code words to discuss explosives and the timing of their respective plots.

Naseer was re-arrested by British authorities in 2010 after a U.S. warrant was issued. He fought extradition, saying he feared he could be sent from the U.S. to Pakistan and subjected there to torture. Naseer's appeal was rejected last month by the European Court of Human Rights, paving the way for him to stand trial in the United States.

Cover Revealed for Brandon Sanderson's Steelheart | Tor.com

The cover revealed to Brandon Sanderson's SteelheartEntertainment Weekly has revealed the cover to Steelheart the first book in Brandon Sanderson?s forthcoming dystopia trilogy from Random House. Click the image for a larger version.

Steelheart marks the first novel by Brandon Sanderson not set in a separate fantasy or science fiction world. Here he tells the story of a group of people dubbed the Epics, all of them superpowered, and all of them evil.

The story blurb released by Random House describes the book as follows:

There are no heroes.

Every single person who manifested powers?we call them Epics?turned out to be evil.

Here, in the city once known as Chicago, an extraordinarily powerful Epic declared himself Emperor. Steelheart has the strength of ten men and can control the elements. It is said no bullet can harm him, no sword can split his skin, no explosion can burn him. He is invincible.

It has been ten years. We live our lives as best we can. Nobody fights back . . . nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans who spend their lives studying powerful Epics, finding their weaknesses, then assassinating them.

My name is David Charleston. I?m not one of the Reckoners, but I intend to join them. I have something they need. Something precious, something incredible. Not an object, but an experience. I know his secret.

I?ve seen Steelheart bleed.

According to Sanderson at this past year?s San Diego Comic Con, the inspiration for the series occured when he got cut off by another driver one day. ?I thought, if I was a supervillain this guy would just be? BOOM.? Which got him thinking about a world where people could actually do that.

In the world of Steelheart, these people are considered ?forces of nature? and eventually the most powerful form little fiefdoms. The protagonist is an 18 year old boy who?s father was killed by Steelheart, one of the most powerful superpowered villains, who joins an assassination guild in hopes of taking Steelheart down.

Calming Food Cravings

You can learn how to calm your food cravings and tame the midnight munchies!

?Is there any pie leftover??? ?Where?s that last piece of birthday cake???? ?I know I hid that Halloween candy somewhere.?? ?I bet some cheese dip would be great with these potato chips.?? Sound familiar?

Most of us at one time or other have experienced the midnight munchies.

We?re watching the end of the movie, almost ready to turn in, and all of a sudden we feel a mystical tug coming from the refrigerator or pantry.? We don?t know what it is exactly, or at least not yet.

But we?ll know it when we see it, or taste it.? And, the more calories and fat, the more we?ll want to snack on it.? Let?s learn a bit more about this crazy craving.

Hunger Basics

Are we hungry?? Probably not.? Chances are we?ve consumed enough calories throughout the day to meet our needs.? What is probably happening is you are experiencing some late night cravings.? What?s the difference??? Hunger is about a very basic need for food in your stomach.

When your body has depleted the food in your stomach, blood sugar and insulin levels drop, and your brain says you need something to eat to function.? Again, this is a very basic need on a very basic level.? Hunger originates in the stomach; an empty stomach.? Nothing complicated about being hungry.

Craving Complications

The complications start with cravings.? Cravings originate in the brain.? The ?need? you feel to dive into that bag of chocolate candy or potato chips stems from several brain functions, none of which are survival, at least not any longer.

Scientists know this because the foods we crave most often (think mac ?n cheese or chocolate) aren?t loaded with the nutrients we need in modern times.

The fact is, the snacks we crave are most often high in calories and rich in two elements ? fat and sugar.? These elements were needed in prehistoric times by our ancestors, the hunters and gatherers of the day.? Chances are, you are not spending hours every day running down game to eat.? Why then do we still crave fat and sugar?

The Brain Double Whammy Attack

Physiologically speaking, it?s in our nature to snack, especially on foods that are rich in fat.? When we snack on fatty foods, our brain receives a nod from the ?opioids? that have been released in the bloodstream, telling us that everything is going to be alright; another leftover from prehistoric days.? If we had our fill of fatty foods, we knew we would survive the night.

Today, when we enjoy our fatty snacks, our brain still processes the same message letting us know that everything is going to be fantastic!? Our brain receives a message of pleasure and elation from these types of foods.? This is a physiological response caused by the feel-good hormones released from these fat-rich foods.

Then we have the complicated science of psychology.? Foods, especially those foods that are high in calories, fat, carbs, and sugar, give us the feeling of pleasure and satisfaction through our memory banks.? We?re given a cookie when we?re still in our highchair.? Eating the cookie causes the feel-good hormones to kick in, resulting in a pleasant state of being.

We feel happy.? We want another cookie so we can get that feeling again.? We?ve got a double whammy of our brain receiving a chemical infusion of pleasure along with our intelligence connecting the dots between the cookie and the happy feeling.? Two strong forces to deal with when it comes to controlling our eating habits.

What Can We Do?

With all this powerful brain stuff going on, how can anyone resist the urge to snack?? We know a plate of celery sticks without the bleu cheese dip is just not going to cut it.? We know a water cracker without cheese and sausage on top is a waste of time.

We know that strawberry will be a disappointment if it?s not dipped in chocolate.? So, how can we fight the unhealthy or diet-sabotaging nighttime snack attacks?

Studies in recent years have now shown that in order to stay away from unhealthy cravings, a person must enjoy a limited amount of the foods they crave.? What these studies have found is that people who, for instance, completely refuse to eat any chocolate, crave more chocolate more often than people who enjoy a small portion of chocolate on a regular basis.

A large percentage of the people in these studies who eliminate the chocolate entirely from their diet, end up eating more chocolate over time than the person who enjoys a piece from time to time.

The more you restrict a food and repress the desire for it, the more you may crave it.? In other words, give your brain what it craves once in a while and it will quit bugging you every night.

We have long known that cravings originate in the brain, not in the stomach.? Now, science is catching up with this knowledge and studying it more closely than ever before.? We know why we crave what we crave, and now we know how to handle the cravings.

Give your brain small doses of the feel-good hormones and the message that you are not going to starve by planning snacks that satisfy your cravings.

When not addressed properly, cravings can be much like a song stuck in your head.? The good news is, if you understand what drives the craving, and why, you can get that snacking-song out of your head so you can stick to your healthy diet, and finally go to sleep!

Four dead in townhouse shooting in Aurora, Colorado

AURORA, Colo. (Reuters) - A gunman who barricaded himself inside a townhouse after killing three people in the home was shot to death by police on Saturday in Aurora, Colorado, the same Denver suburb where 12 people were slain in a movie house massacre last July, police said.

The gunman and his three victims, as well as a woman who fled safely from the home at the outset of the violence and alerted authorities, were all believed to be related to one another, police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson said.

But the motive for the killings was not immediately understood.

"We're trying to find out what set this guy off," she told Reuters.

A hostage-negotiation team called to the scene had sought to talk the suspect into surrendering for about five hours before police moved to shoot tear gas into the home at about 8:00 a.m. (10:00 a.m. EST/1500 GMT), prompting the gunman to open fire on officers from inside, police said.

About an hour later, the gunman began firing at police again from a second-floor window, and police returned fire, killing the suspect, according to a police statement following the incident. No police were wounded.

Officers entering the townhouse found the bodies of the gunman and three other people - two men and a woman - who were presumed to have been shot hours earlier before police were called to the scene.

"None of the officers heard gunshots until they were directed at us at about 8 o'clock," Carlson said. The woman who escaped the home also told police the victims were shot before she fled.

The names of the gunman and his three victims were being withheld until the coroner could confirm their identities and notify next of kin, authorities said.

The episode kept residents in much of the surrounding community awake overnight, as police notified neighbors of an emergency situation and evacuated several adjacent blocks.

One neighbor, Sunil Pawar, 59, said he received a reverse 911 call advising him to stay inside and away from windows before police later showed up to ring doorbells and escort residents of the townhouse development to safety.

Pawar said he opted to stay put, later hearing gunshots, followed by the voices of police calling to the gunman though a bullhorn, saying, "Sonny, we want to talk to you, pick up the phone, Sonny."

Another neighbor, Michael Ignace, 46, said he had previously spoken with the man suspected of the shooting, and "he seemed like a reasonable guy, and we talked about motorcycles."

The standoff and shooting unfolded just a few miles south of the Aurora movie theater where 12 people were killed and 58 others wounded when a lone gunman opened fire there in July during a midnight showing of the Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."

The suspect in that rampage, former college student James Holmes, is due back in court on Monday for a hearing in which prosecutors will seek to convince a judge they have sufficient evidence to put him on trial.

The Colorado movie theater killings had ranked as deadliest mass shooting in the United States last year until a December 14 massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, where a gunman shot 20 school children and six adults to death before taking his own life. The shooter in that case also had killed his mother at their home.

Pioneering research on Type 2 diabetes

Jan. 4, 2013 ? While legions of medical researchers have been looking to understand the genetic basis of disease and how mutations may affect human health, a group of biomedical researchers at UC Santa Barbara is studying the metabolism of cells and their surrounding tissue, to ferret out ways in which certain diseases begin. This approach, which includes computer modeling, can be applied to Type 2 diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases, among others.

Scientists at UCSB have published groundbreaking results of a study of Type 2 diabetes that point to changes in cellular metabolism as the triggering factor for the disease, rather than genetic predisposition. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition in which blood sugar or glucose levels are high. It affects a large and growing segment of the human population, especially among the obese. The team of scientists expects the discovery to become a basis for efforts to prevent and cure this disease.

The current work is based on a previous major finding by UCSB's Jamey Marth, who determined the identity of the molecular building blocks needed in constructing the four types of macromolecules of all cells when he was based at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in La Jolla in 2008. These include the innate, genetic macromolecules, such as nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and their encoded proteins, and the acquired metabolic macromolecules known as glycans and lipids. Marth is a professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and the Biomolecular Science and Engineering Program; and holds the John Carbon Chair in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Duncan and Suzanne Mellichamp Chair in Systems Biology. He is also a professor with the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla.

"By studying the four types of components that make up the cell, we can, for the first time, begin to understand what causes many of the common grievous diseases that exist in the absence of definable genetic variation, but, instead, are due to environmental and metabolic alterations of our cells," said Marth. UCSB is the only institution studying these four types of molecules in the cells while also using computational modeling to determine their functions in health and disease, according to Marth.

The new study, published in the December 27 issue of PLOS ONE, relies on computational systems biology modeling to understand the pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes.

"Even in the post-genomic era, after the human genome has been sequenced, we're beginning to realize that diseases aren't always in our genes -- that the environment is playing a major role in many of the common diseases," said Marth.

Normally, beta cells in the pancreas sense a rise in blood sugar and then secrete insulin to regulate blood glucose levels. But in Type 2 diabetes, the beta cells fail to execute this important function and blood sugar rises, a trend that can reach life-threatening levels. The researchers identified a "tipping point," or metabolic threshold, that when crossed results in the failure of beta cells to adequately sense glucose in order to properly secrete insulin.

Obesity has long been linked to Type 2 diabetes, but the cellular origin of the disease due to beta cell failure has not been described until now. "In obesity there's a lot of fat in the system," said Marth. "When the cell is exposed to high levels of fat or lipids, this mechanism starts, and that's how environment plays a role, among large segments of the population bearing 'normal' genetic variation. We're trying to understand what actually causes disease, which is defined as cellular dysfunction. Once we understand what causes disease we can make a difference by devising more rational and effective preventative and therapeutic approaches."

The research was based on a unique approach. "This project illustrates the power of systems biology; namely, how a network perspective combined with computational modeling can shed new light on biophysical circuits, such as this beta-cell glucose transport system," said co-author Frank Doyle. "It cannot be done by molecular biology alone, nor computational modeling alone; rather, it requires the uniquely interdisciplinary approach that is second-nature here at UCSB." Doyle is associate dean for research of the College of Engineering; director of UCSB's Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies; professor of chemical engineering; and the Mellichamp Chair in Process Control.

"We are excited to bring our 20 years of expertise on Type 1 diabetes and systems biology methods to look at the networks responsible for the onset of Type 2 diabetes," said Doyle.

According to the American Diabetes Association, 8.3 percent of the U.S. population has diabetes. The disease can lead to nerve loss, blindness, and death.

The first author of the paper is Camilla Luni, who was a UCSB postdoctoral researcher at the time of the study, and is now with the University of Padova, in Italy. The research was funded by a grant from the U.S. Army Research Office to UCSB's Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies, and a grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
