Maine?s Bureau of Insurance Encourages Home and Business Owners to Mark 25^th Anniversary by Considering Flood Insurance

GARDINER? ?? Twenty five years ago this month, snowmelt and precipitation from two springtime storms produced some of the worst flooding in decades, particularly in central and southwestern Maine.? Fourteen of Maine?s counties were declared federal disaster areas, and ?the 500-year flood? resulted in significant damage to numerous homes and businesses.

?Few communities in Maine have lingering snow this spring, but it is still important to make sure families and businesses are protected against flooding that can occur anytime,? Superintendent Eric Cioppa stated. ??The first step is to look at your flood risk and assess your insurance needs.?

Superintendent Cioppa explained that standard homeowners or renters insurance usually protects policyholders against damage caused by wind, rain or falling trees.? Flood damage, however, is not typically covered unless consumers have purchased separate coverage through the Federal Emergency Management Agency?s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).? Consumers should contact their insurance company or agent to determine the extent of their coverage.

The NFIP can provide coverage specifically for flooding or rising ground water, both for an insured building and its contents.? Consumers can obtain more information about flood insurance through the NFIP website, www.floodsmart.gov, or by calling 1-800-427-2419.? Additionally, the Maine Emergency Management Agency offers flood tips and recommendations at www.state.me.us/mema/.
