Mukteshwar On The Kumaon Hills

By: Gabrieljohn Mukteshwar is a town and a hill station situated in the Nainital district of the Uttarkhand state. Located on the Kumaon Hills at an altitude of about 2286 meters above sea level Mukteshwar is also a popular tourist destination in India. Mukteshwar is situated at a distance of about 51 km away from Nainital, about 72 km away from Haldwani, and at about 343 km away from the countrys capital city, Delhi. The place Mukteshwar got its name from a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva called Mukteshwar Dham, which is located at the highest point in this town. Mukteshwar is rich in its natural and scenic beauty. The town on top provides a magnificent view of the Himalayan peaks which include the second highest peak in India called the Nanda Devi.

Mukteshwar was initially known for its temples and shrines. The place was then selected as a research centre for serum production to protect the animals and cattle from cattle plague. The Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory was shifted from Pune to Mukteshwar, on the advice of the Cattle Plague Commission. This facilitated the segregation and the quarantine of the highly contagious organisms. The laboratory was completely destroyed in a fire, but was reconstructed in the year 1901. Later the laboratory was developed into the Indian Veterinary ResearchInstitute. The headquarters was shifted to Izatnagar later.Still Mukteshwar serves as the hill campus of IVRI, or the Indian Veterinary Research Institute including facilities such as an experimental goat farm.

There is a museum inside the Indian Veterinary Research Institute. The notable scientist and Nobel Prize Winner, Robert Koch had once visited this institute on the request of the government of India, the articles and microscope used by him is kept for display in the museum here. There is a cold room here which has made by carving the hill in1900, to store biological materials. This place attracts a lot of tourists. Renowned writer and nature lover, Jim Corbett has visited Mukteshwar and wrote about Mukteshwar in the book, Man-eaters of Kumaon.

Chaili- ki Jali or the overhanging cliffs, sunrise point situated near the PWD guest house run by the government, the Indian InstituteofVetenery Research, Sri Mukteshwar Mahraj Jis Samadhi, the temple complex and the Tapovan which is ideal for meditation are the main place to visit in Mukteshwar.Nice scenery can be viewed from Chaulli ki Jaali, where rocks jut out from the hill face at an odd angle. This is a great place to observe eagles and other feathered scavengers as they dive down at their prey. Chauli-ki-Jali is a perfect spot for rock-climbing and rappelling.
The nearest airport is at Pant Nagar and the nearest railway station is at Kathgodam.
