Chain smoking is good! Local church organizes youth disc golf tours

One Durant church is urging kids to chain smoke.

Let?s back up a little: First United Methodist Church is in the midst of a summer full of activities for youths. One of those is called ?Chain Smokers,? referring to the popular (but still somewhat underground) hobby/sport of disc golf.

Here?s where the ?chain smoking? comes in: Disc golf is played with plastic discs (similar to a Frisbee, but try not to utter the ?F? word in connection to this game). The discs are thrown from a tee box (similar to golf) toward a metal basket on a pole (the ?hole?), where hanging chains rattle once the disc enters the basket.

Once a player?s disc has rattled into the basket, he has smoked the chains.

Now that it?s settled, let?s get some kids out there chain smoking! Every Tuesday in July, First UMC Youth Director Tim Ford takes a van-load of kids to a regional disc golf course for some friendly competition.

Durant lacks a disc golf course, so the group has visited a private course at Lake Texoma as well as Munson Park in Denison, Texas. This month, the group will visit 9-hole and 18-hole courses in Ardmore and McKinney, Texas.

?As it grows and gets more popular, we?ll probably go farther (to look for courses),? Ford said.

Local youths interested in playing disc golf with the First UMC group should meet at the church (corner of Beech and Third streets) at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 23 and/or 30. The trip is free, but bring money for lunch or bring a sack lunch.

It would help to bring your own discs, but Ford has a small collection for borrowing. And FYI, this game has almost no relation whatsoever to the wildly popular ?Ultimate Frisbee.?
